A new linear, D-A-D small molecule based on thiazolothiazole has been synthesized. It exhibits excellent thermal stability and relatively low HOMO level. By tuning donor to acceptor ratio and thermal annealing, photovoltaic devices based on the blend of this compound and PC71BM exhibited perfect phase separation sizes (10–20 nm) and balanced charge transport (electron mobility/hole mobility = 2:1), which leads to power conversion efficiencies as high as 3.73%, among the top reported for solution processed organic solar cells based on small molecules.
