Nitrogen doping is successfully applied to terminal oxygen ligands of [MoO6] octahedral layers in α-MoO3 nanobelts through ammonolysis at soft chemical conditions. In addition to an enhanced electronic conductivity, the ammonolyzed compound exhibits faster lithium ion mobility than regular α-MoO3. As a consequence, the material exhibits specific capacities above 250 A h kg−1 in the potential window 1.5–3.5 V, accompanied by an activation process. The material shows much better cycling stability than MoO3 and performs without fading during more than 300 cycles.
