Carbon coated ZnFe2O4 nanoparticle-based electrodes show exceptional specific capacity, higher than 1000 mAh g−1, and high rate performance upon long-term lithium uptake and release, benefiting from the utilization of environmentally friendly sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as binder. Furthermore, a new electrochemical reduction process occurring upon lithiation is proposed, based on in situ X-ray diffraction analysis.
