A new synthesis by reactive intercalation of a functional material in one step, with no solid or liquid by-products, leads to the formation of uniform and nanoscale FeF2 crystallites (9–12 nm) which are clamped in a well conductive graphitic matrix. The composite shows superior performance for the storage of lithium and can be used as cathode material in batteries. Specific capacities of up to 418 mAh g−1 were measured at 40 °C after 25 cycles.
