High performing metal top electrodes for organic solar cells are fabricated by introducing an ultrathin gold wetting layer for subsequent silver deposition. This enables conductive silver films down to thicknesses of 3 nm showing superior optical and electrical properties compared to indium tin oxide (ITO). Efficiencies of 4.7% are achieved for top-illuminated solar cells with silver electrode, on par with ITO-containing devices.
