An in-situ high-energy X-ray diffraction technique is deployed to investigate the thermal decomposition of a delithiated Li1-x[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]0.9O2 cathode during thermal abuse. A mechanism based on proton intercalation is proposed to explain the negative impact of LiPF6 on the thermal stability of Li1-x[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]0.9O2.
