All-surface-atomic semiconductors of SnS and SnSe freestanding sheets are synthesized using a scalable and convenient strategy. The all-surface-atomic SnS sheet-based photoelectrodes exhibit an incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency that is superior to that of other visible-light-driven water splitting. This allows manipulation of the basic properties of advanced materials on the atomic scale.
