Dense shell or dense core? Theoretical investigations have contributed considerably to the understanding of structures of dendrimers in solution. Computer simulations and scattering experiments show that dendrimers are flexible macromolecules that can adopt many possible conformations, in which back-folding of the end groups into the interior of the molecule plays an important role (see picture).
