Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are a new class of materials which are particularly attractive for the interplay of quantum and classical aspects in magnetism. In particular they show the tunneling effects of the magnetization which have been long looked for. To design new SMMs chemists must understand which are the structural factors determining these unusual properties. The goal of this review is to provide the necessary theoretical background and to report the state of the art of the field.
