A microfluidic droplet generator uniformly encapsulates an equivalent number of engineered E. coli cells and the same Fe and Mn metal ion concentrations in identically sized droplets. In their Communication on page 5634 ff., T. S. Seo, S. Y. Lee, and co-workers demonstrate the synthesis of homogeneous biogenic paramagnetic nanoparticles inside recombinant E. coli cells by encapsulating them in nanoliter-scale droplets.
