Electron transfer turns the chemically inert CO2 molecule into a reactive radical anion. In their Communication on page 9327 ff., C.-K. Siu, M. K. Beyer, and co-workers show how CO2.−, stabilized in a water cluster, attacks the CC bond of methyl acrylate to form a new covalent bond. Without the hydration shell, however, neutral CO2 is released.
