Highly transparent, flexible films with increased gas permeability and good mechanical properties-suitable for fresh vegetable packaging—are formulated and produced by melt blending a commercial polypropylene matrix with a poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)-based material. Santolo Taglialatela Scafati et al. present a simple but effective way to tune the permeability of polyolefin-based monolayer films for the popular food packaging industry. The results demonstrate the potential of such innovative blends, which can be processed under the conditions already adopted for polypropylene matrices that are used industrially.
