To dye for: Bright red or bright near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission are the key features of a series of functional borondipyrromethene and borondiindomethene dyes that carry one or two (dimethylamino)styryl units as an extension of the chromophore. The choice of a suitable meso substituent yields pH indicators or metal-ion-responsive dyes with a variety of powerful signaling pathways.
