Zincing about catalysis: A straightforward method for the dehydration of primary amides using zinc catalysts is presented. Excellent performance is demonstrated by a system composed of Zn(OTf)2 as the catalyst and N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide as the dehydration reagent under ambient conditions. The applicability of this procedure is shown by the dehydration of various substrates with excellent yields and functional-group tolerance (see scheme).
