A fluorophore displaying both large solvatochromism and CIE: A series of 17,17-dialkyl-3,14-diaryltetrabenzofluorenes including the 3,14-bis(p-nitrophenyl) derivative were prepared by using Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. The fluorescence of the dinitro derivative in aqueous THF exhibits a considerably large solvent effect (Δλem>90 nm) and crystalline-induced emission (CIE).
