A noble bunch: Highly luminescent noble metal nanoclusters have recently emerged as promising probes for constructing high-performance optical sensors. This review summarizes the common syntheses and the luminescence properties of water-soluble luminescent thiolate- and protein-protected gold and silver nanoclusters and discusses the recent progress in their use as optical sensors with an emphasis on the underlying signal-generation mechanisms.
