Vitamin C is the common name for L-ascorbic acid (AsA). In humans, the principal role of Vitamin C is to scavenge reactive oxygen species to play an important role as cofactor for many enzymes. This review article provides a current and forward looking perspective of how plant science can contribute to improve L-ascorbic acid content in crop species using plant biotechnology, by gene transformation, quantitative trait loci and association mapping-based approaches.
