Patterned biomaterials provide a platform for manipulation of cell-surface interactions: this schematic is an example of topographical engineering of wells for fabrication on a soft polymer substrate to direct cell growth and therefore tissue architecture for tissue regeneration applications. This review highlights practical applications of surface-patterned biomaterials for treatment of disease. Specifically, the review discusses applications of surface patterning for antimicrobial surfaces, neurite outgrowth, cardiac constructs, and stem cell differentiation.
