Code of practice: We describe an easy-to-use scheme for expanding the genetic code in Xenopus laevis oocytes. We directly applied into oocytes an orthogonal aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (aaRS)/suppressor tRNACUA pair originally developed for genetic code expansion in mammalian cells. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated by inserting photoactive tyrosine analogues into N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors.
