Ancient chemistry: In RNA formation catalysed by dipeptides, RNA monomers in the water-ice eutectic phase undergo oligomerisation upon incubation with catalytic peptides Ser-His and Ala-His. Reactions proceed via an intermediate in which the dipeptide covalently binds to nucleotide monophosphate. This could represent a link between prebiotic chemistry and the RNA world.
