Ace of base: The mechanism of alcoholysis of cyclic meso-anhydrides catalyzed by β-amino alcohols is investigated by density functional calculations. Both nucleophilic catalysis and general base catalysis pathways are explored, and the nucleophilic pathway is shown to be approximately higher in energy than the general base pathway.
