Extra terrace trials: Using core–shell Pt–Ru nanocatalysts, a new direct pathway based on Pt sites in close proximity to Ru terraces, provides activated methoxy species to Ru terraces which react with surface oxygenates from water dissociation for accelerated CO2 formation. This non-CO route requires a lower potential than the corresponding process on Pt.
