La-bile catalysis: La2O3 and MgO nanoparticles (3–4 nm) dispersed on carbon nanofibers are prepared and found to be effective catalysts for aldol reactions at room temperature. A high selectivity of the aldol reaction product is found for both catalysts because the formation of the elimination product is limited. La2O3/CNF is found to be the more robust of the two catalysts.
