Dangerous colors: [MnIII(tmpyp)] serves as an efficient catalyst for the oxidative degradation of azo dyes such as amaranth by H2O2, which is a simple and robust method for the treatment of colored industrial wastewater. Kinetic data reveal the transient formation of [MnIII(OOH)(tmpyp)] prior to the formation of two highly active species—[MnV(O)2(tmpyp)] and [MnIV(O)(tmpyp)]—both of which lead to the oxidative degradation of the substrate.
