A life ring for catalysis in water: Zirconium-functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilicas with SBA-15 structure are prepared. Framework organic content within the mesoporous structure exerts a dramatic effect on the physicochemical properties and the speciation of the supported zirconium species. Moderate to good catalytic activity in biodiesel production and outstanding water tolerance is found in esterification and transesterification reactions.
