Interparticle mesoporosity: Iron-functionalized silica nanoparticles with interparticle mesoporosity (see figure) act as a highly efficient adsorbent and catalyst for toluene oxidation in the gas phase. Through the combined use of catalytic tests and spectroscopic techniques, we prove that the superior activity of the catalyst is attributed uniquely to isolated iron incorporated into the silica matrix.
