He′s behind you! Maeda and Baiker employed in situ modulation excitation IR spectroscopy to explore diastereomer formation between ketopantolactone and cinchonidine on a Pt/Al2O3 catalyst surface. They found evidence that a C9[BOND]OH⋅⋅⋅O[DOUBLE BOND]C bond participates in enantiodifferentiation in the heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of ketopantolactone to pantolactone.
