Acetaldehyde chokes on Cl: Cl blocks the oxygen vacant sites on Ag2O(0 0 1) surface and prevents non-selective oxometallacycle formation. Cs and Cl co-exist on the surface in the form of CsClxOy complexes. The main role of these promoters is to stabilize the non-vacant oxy-chloride surface phase that keeps ethylene oxide (EO) selectivity high.
