Unusual bonding situations were revealed by quantum-chemical calculations on the compounds CL2 with L=PR3, CO, NHC, C(NR2)2, according to which carbodicarbenes and carbodiphosphoranes should be classified as divalent carbon(0) compounds in which ligands L and a C atom with two lone-pair orbitals are involved in donor–acceptor interactions (see picture), while the quasi-linear carbon suboxide C3O2 and tetraaminoallenes (R2N)2C[DOUBLE BOND]C[DOUBLE BOND]C(NR2)2 exhibit “hidden” divalent carbon(0) character.
