Reduced circumstances: A polyoxometalate of the Keggin structure substituted with RuIII catalyzes the photoreduction of CO2 to CO with tertiary amines as reducing agents (see picture). UV/Vis, EPR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy enabled determination of the coordination of CO2 to the ruthenium center of the polyoxometalate. DFT calculations showed the preferred binding mode of CO2 to the polyoxometalate and the electronic structure of bound CO2.
