In exchange for regioselectivity: Unsymmetrically substituted dibromoheterocycles undergo regioselective exchange reactions with iPrMgCl⋅LiCl or, in difficult cases, with 2,4,6-triisopropylphenylmagnesium bromide complexed with a diamine ligand (see scheme). Various thienyl-, furyl- and pyridylmagnesium derivatives are synthesised with a regioselectivity of up to >99:1. Further selective functionalisation of these heterocyclic scaffolds is readily achieved.
