Out of the cage: A new class of inorganic–organic hybrid microporous materials has been synthesized by treating octa(hydridosilsesquioxane) (H8Si8O12; see figure, D4R=double-four-ring structure) with various diols, including 1,3-propanediol (PD), 1,4-cyclohexanediol (CHD), and 1,3-adamantanediol (AD). The AD-linked product is highly stable against hydrolysis, possibly owing to the higher steric hindrance and the high hydrophobicity of AD links.
