Let's go down the column! The first [Cd(dpm)2] complexes based on α,β-unsubstituted dipyrrin ligands (dpm) have been prepared and characterised in both solution and the solid state. The coordination sphere of the metal centre, occupied by two dpm chelates, may be extended with additional pyridyl or imidazolyl groups, unlike what has been reported for the ZnII analogues. This leads to self-assembly of these species into 1-, 2-, and 3D coordination polymers, which display luminescence in the crystalline state (see figure).
