Super, smashing, great: The reaction between tert-butyl bromide and the Lewis acid aluminum tribromide gave the room-temperature ionic liquid (RT-IL) [C(CH3)3]+ [Al2Br7] (m.p. 2 °C; see figure). X-ray diffraction confirmed the structure of the tert-butyl cation. Based on the new absolute Brønsted acidity scale, an absolute pHabs of 171 was calculated, which ranks the RT-IL on the edge of superacidity.
