Illuminating membranes: New bimodal contrast agents were synthesized and their interactions with different biomembrane models were investigated by a newly developed method based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and by hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR spectroscopy (Hyper-CEST; see figure). This combined study paves the way for their use as potential biomarkers for membrane fluidity and for more detailed and quantitative interpretation of Hyper-CEST spectra.
