A wrecking ball: A non-hydrothermal method has been developed for the large-scale production of well-crystallised, uniform hierarchical TiO2 nanorod spheres (see figure). These TiO2 nanorod spheres have been found to exhibit high photocatalytic performances in eliminating contaminants and killing bacteria, broadening the applications of nanotechnology for water purification. The underlying mechanisms are explored in detail.
