Microporous adsorbents or membranes such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks can be used for size selective separations. A steady state membrane process would be an attractive alternative to the usually used cyclic batch adsorption/desorption process. The basic principles of molecular sieve separations are reviewed and some examples of this type of process are discussed.
