The fluid flow and suspension characteristics in small-scale, stirred, single-use bioreactors were investigated experimentally and numerically. The required impeller speeds for homogenous suspension and the resulting shear stress levels were determined. The microcarrier type significantly influences the impeller speed required to achieve the desired suspension characteristics.
