5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a particularly promising platform molecule. In this study glucose and fructose derived from cellulose, the main component of biomass, serve as substrate for the continuous dehydration to levulinic acid and 5-HMF. In mixtures of water and solvents with lower boiling points higher conversion and selectivity were reached.
