Subcellular uptake of manganese in MIN-6 insulinoma β-cells was visualized and quantified via X-ray fluorescence microscopy following exposure to 50 µ m MnCl2. Significant increase in manganese was measured under baseline 2 m m glucose conditions and more significantly at activating 16 m m glucose and at 16 m m glucose + 30 m m KCl media formulations. Intracellular manganese distribution changed with its increasing concentration and shifted from homogeneous throughout the whole cell to mainly cytoplasmic.
