No randomized trials to date have determined whether surgery, radiation therapy, or a combination of both is most effective in the treatment of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oropharynx. The current findings, along with available data on the functional consequences of treatment, suggest that radiation therapy with or without neck dissection is preferable for the majority of patients with SCC of the oropharynx.
