A population of 16,643 analyzable patients with early-stage breast carcinoma submitted from cancer registries were studied to determine the compliance rate, to established practice standards for breastconserving therapy and to discern whether treatment compliance varied by patient or by hospital factors. Compliance was ≥80% for 16 of 22 standards studied, with significant variation across the type of hospital cancer program and geographic location. Six standards had poor compliance and represent a need for targeted physician education.
