Rates of cancer in American Indians and Alaska Natives are lower than in all other races combined, although they vary markedly by region and by type of cancer. From 1990 to 2001, the cancer mortality rate increased in American Indians and Alaska Natives but decreased substantially in all races in the United States combined.
