Tobacco smoking, which was linked to the risk of childhood cancers in past studies, contains several mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds that can cross the placenta. In what they believe to be the largest case–control study of childhood germ cell tumors (GCT) published to date, the authors found no evidence that parental smoking and drinking alcohol were related to the risk of GCTs in offspring.
