Patient navigation represents a recent innovation that seeks to help underserved patients overcome logistical, cultural, educational, and other barriers to care across the cancer spectrum. The authors used a literature review and original qualitative research to examine how navigators function in practice and to distinguish navigation from other kinds of cancer support services. The need is highlighted for research to examine the effects and effectiveness of navigation for overcoming barriers to care among underserved patients.
