The usefulness of positron emission tomography in staging low-grade lymphomas varies depending on histology. Sensitivity is excellent in follicular lymphomas, good in marginal zone lymphomas, and limited in B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma. In all low-grade lymphomas the emergence of foci of intense uptake should raise suspicion of conversion to high-grade disease.
