During the past 3 decades, the incidence of cutaneous melanoma in Southern Germany tripled, but the mortality from this tumor decreased as a result of its earlier detection. Current preventive strategies should be intensified to include older age groups and particularly males, who continue to present with melanomas that have a worse prognosis.
