In a cohort of 3470 patients with schizophrenia, during the 11 years of follow-up, the mortality rate was nearly 4-times higher than in the general population, with cancer being the second most frequent cause of death. In particular, an increased risk of mortality was found in women from breast cancer and in men from lung cancer.
