Background mucosae of esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs) accumulated aberrant DNA methylation, and methylation levels of 5 genes had significant correlation with smoking duration (P = .001 for the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal esterase L1 gene UCHL1). The epigenetic field defect for ESCCs will provide novel target for risk diagnosis and cancer prevention.
