The authors evaluate the UroVysion multiprobe fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay versus urine cytology for detecting urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) from 1835 concurrent urine samples. The results reveal higher sensitivity but decreased specificity with the multiprobe FISH assay compared with cytology, suggesting that it may be efficient to use the FISH assay for patients at high risk for UCC, like those who have cytologic atypia.
